I’ve never been on a Yoga Retreat before, it’s on the bucket list. I got to participate in a Weekend Immersion with Kerry Armstrong at Firefly Yoga (my yoga home). It’s like a retreat except I get to sleep in my own bed at the end of the day and eat my own meals. I see ads for amazing yoga retreats in these exotic places and it sounds awesome but my bank account says “Pfff, yeah right!” so it was nice to take advantage of this opportunity so close to home with people I know, except for Kerry who I met for the first time doing this immersion.
The weekend included a series of workshops - Hearts & Hips, Learn To Float (Inversions), and a Backbending Workshop. It was also a weekend to learn more about the Chakra system, gods & goddesses of Yoga, Mudras, Kirtan (chanting), Pranayama exercises, and lots and lots of meditation. It was a physically demanding weekend where I struggled with arm balances and back bends but it was so fulfilling mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. The intimacy of the weekend made it even better as it was just a small of group of us so lots of sharing and laughs. I’m glad I did this after doing Yoga Teacher Training, I don’t think it would have had as much of an impact on me if I didn’t.
This weekend introduced so much discovery about myself, it’s not even funny! I was able to get my hands to touch in Eagle Pose for the first time E-V-E-R, I figured out which of my chakras needs attention and given tools to make that happen, and got myself a decent night sleep for the first time in a very long time which I totally credit to chanting “Sa Ta Na Ma” for 24 minutes! I keep changing and letting go of old ways of thinking and being.
This weekend motivated me to dive deeper into learning more about Chakras and stories behind the gods. We had an assignment to create a class based on a god or goddess and I chose Kali - crazy right? But I was drawn to her from the moment I first learned about her and I’m totally going to make this into it’s own blog post so stay tuned!
A full out yoga retreat will happen for me some day, but if you’re interested in taking a sweet vacation, Kerry Armstrong is offering two retreats this year:
